Music program
Webster has a wonderful and varied music program. The music program is offered to all 3rd-6th grade students and covers music literacy, music from different cultures and styles, singing, music and movement, music notation, composition, improvisation, instrumental music, and performance. 3rd/4th grade is classroom music and 5th/6th grade is band or choir.
In 3rd grade, students will learn to sing, read, and write basic rhythmic notation. They will learn to identify and classify different instruments and instrument families. Students will be able to identify and perform different elements of musical expression and vocabulary and use the proper vocabulary for these elements. Students will be able to perform, create, respond to and connect to music. The ultimate goal is to create a lifelong love of music.
In 4th grade, students will learn to read, write, improvise, compose, and perform music on the recorder and ukulele. Students will also participate in singing, music literacy activities, music notation, composition, and rhythmic identification. Students will be able to identify and perform different elements of musical expression and vocabulary and use the proper vocabulary for these elements. Students will be able to perform, create, respond to and connect to music. The ultimate goal is to create a lifelong love of music.
5th/6th grade band and choir builds upon the previous music knowledge gained from 3rd and 4th grade. Band and choir is a pull out program that meets twice a week for approximately 40 minutes per class. Students will learn how to play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. Students will learn the proper elements of singing in choir. Both groups will perform songs from different styles and cultures. Students will learn how to play/sing complex rhythms, create compositions, and improvisation. Students will perform in several concerts. Students will be able to identify and perform different elements of musical expression and vocabulary and use the proper vocabulary for these elements. Students will be able to perform, create, respond to and connect to music. The ultimate goal is to create a lifelong love of music.
